Behind The Lens
Location
This shot is from a kayaking trip in Kaikoura, New Zealand. It was complete chance that my camera was pointed in the right direction at the right moment, and I can assure you I got soaked when the dolphins hit the water.Time
It was late morning, and we had been kayaking for about 30 minutes when we came upon a pod of over 400 dusky dolphins. They are one of the most active dolphins species in the world, and as you can see, they definitely put on a show for us, loved the moving kayak and stayed very close by.Lighting
It happened to be a beautiful day, and the sun was reflecting nicely off the water.Equipment
I didn't want to risk taking my Nikon out onto open water, so I just had my cell phone with me in a plastic bag for safe keeping. I pulled it out when the dolphins came around and just kept shooting. This was definitely the best picture I got.Inspiration
I was beside myself with excitement at seeing these gorgeous animals up close and wanted to document it for my family back home. Undoubtedly this captures both my excitement, and the activity of the dolphins all at once.Editing
Nothing at all. I am very much a beginner photographer and don't have the equipment to do much editing. So this is raw, what you see is what you get.In my camera bag
Usually just my Nikon Coolpix L830, an extra set or two of batteries, and an extra memory card. Since it isn't a manual lens, I don't have a use for much else. However, keeping a snack on hand is always a good idea.Feedback
Be patient and be ready. For something like this, be totally willing to live in the moment out from behind the lens, and trust that the right snapshot will happen. Keep your hands ready and stay alert. If you are prepared for it, you can do surprisingly well. And I'm certain I'm not the only one who feels like certain shots just fall into place. This was definitely one of them.
