Behind The Lens

Location

Ponte Umberto in Rome

Time

This was taken at sunset just before the blue hour

Lighting

Shot with the natural light that was there, but shot bracketed exposures to ensure that everything was correctly exposed.

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark 3 with a Tamron 24-70mm lens. I used a Really Right Stuff mini tripod which nicely rested on the bridge itself.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture the Vatican and wanted the viewer to see the beauty of the sunset the way I had seen it at that moment in time.

Editing

As mentioned I used exposure brackets when taking the shot. In post I simply blended the best exposures from each image and used some tonal contrast adjustments to make certain areas pop.

In my camera bag

For landscape and cityscape I cannot go anywhere without my Lee Filters kit. Also I am a big fan of Really Right Stuff and when traveling take their mini tripod and safari clamp.

Feedback

Best time for sunset shots in my opinion is 10-20 minutes after the sun has actually set. If you want night shots, taken them during the blue hour and at all costs avoid taking them when the sky is black (for me it lacks interest when there is no light in the sky)
