I took this photo at the News Journal of Delaware. I'm just self taught so I have no formal education in photography at all. This was a class that they were having so I decided to stop by for a bit.Time
This was about 11:30 to 1p.m. in that time frame. Pretty hot day from what I can remember so no one was outside at the time. So I figured I would use the lighting to my advantage with the hard shadows & crisp lighting from the outdoors. To be able to get that silhouette look.Lighting
Just went with natural lighting on this photo. As is was pretty harsh outside, but I happen to be indoors at the time. The entire outside building is laid over with blue glass. So it would actually make the photo look very blueish if left in color.Equipment
Just used a Canon Rebel T5i with a Sigma 50mm 1.4 EX DG HSM lens hand held. Since I did not have my Canon 7D Mark II at the time just yet.Inspiration
I liked how the blue glass windows where diffusion some of the light hitting the walls, yet it was still very sharp & hard on the columns and edges of the doors. Mainly I liked that with the way the light was coming in that the person whom was chimpping with his camera was almost totally in shadow to where you could only see the outline of his body. So I exposed for the highlights outside to make sure he would be underexposed. Otherwise he would have been exposed correctly but the highlights would have been blown out. Thus taken away from it being a silhouette of the other photog chimpping. Without him standing where he was at it would have taken away from the composition of the pillars & square shapes for the doors & windows. Which would have not made the picture work at all.Editing
With any image I take, I always do my white balance & color corrections regardless if it will stay in color or black & white. From there on I may do some noise reduction if needed. I'm not a fan of removing items from a photo basically if it's there, it stays there. Unless it's a portrait where I will do some retouching to the skin. I primarily used Lightroom, Topaz DeNoise, Nik's Collection for a few touch ups. Since it was a very blue photo due to the surroundings I turned it into a black & white photo with a bit further adjustments to the RGB channels for a specific look I was going for.In my camera bag
Well I wish I had L lenses but I don't so I work within my means. Mainly I just use a carry bag I got from Amazon as a freebie item which has work out well so far. Really the main thing for an image like this is to make sure the subject you want silhouetted is back lit. Expose for your highlights and if need be underexpose a bit to my sure your subject just is dark with a outline are them. It helps more in they are shaded away from the main light source. Sunsets are a great time to try this out for sure.
