The underground of Montepulciano, Italy is full of Etruscan cellars. They were used to store wine as well as be the avenues to the water wells needed at the residences and businesses at the higher elevations in the hill town. Horses walked down these sloping steps. When needed, they were tied up to the wrought iron loops that can be seen on the walls.
