Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my fiancé's mother's house. We were there as she was kindly looking after our dog for a few days while we attended the wedding of a friend.

Time

This picture was taken on Tuesday, 30 August 2016 at 17:34.

Lighting

I am extremely happy with the result of this photo as all the lighting was natural coming through large bay windows and filtered by the open slats of venetian blinds.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D3100 with a 50mm f/1.4G prime lens.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of my dog, just as I'm sure most dog owners do. As I hired the lens for a week to use at the wedding, I wanted to practice using it so I could work out how best to compose my images and get used to the focal length. Given that he is so photogenic it seemed only right to use him as a subject.

Editing

Using Photoshop Elements 12 I increased the exposure ever so slightly to make the whites a little brighter. I then used a photo editor app on my phone to add the watermark.

In my camera bag

As I only started really focusing on my photography in February of this year my kit bag is very minimalistic. I carry around my Nikon D3100 with a kit lens, 2 spare batteries, a shutter trigger, a table top tripod, a 1.4 meter tripod, a set of neutral density filters and a set of lenses for my smartphone. I also carry a few small trinkets to use as props such as a small crystal ball, miniature bucket / watering can, reflective aviator sunglasses and a compass.

Feedback

Patience! Patience is key when photographing any animal even if you spend most of your time with them. As they don't understand what you are trying to achieve it is impossible to get them to pose for that "perfect" image. You could find yourself getting easily frustrated at the lack of quality usable images, but with a bit of patience that magic moment will present itself sooner than you think.
