Behind The Lens

Location

This photo of a Monarch was taken outside my home in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Our house is lined with Sedum plants, which attracts an assortment of butterflies and bees. We have been blessed the past 2 years to have Monarchs pass through this time of year. They are beautiful and breath-taking!

Time

This photo was taken around 6pm EST in the evening sun. The day was August 30th, 2016. The weather was sunny and in the high 80's.

Lighting

I really enjoy using the evening sun as much as possible. It adds a warming effect to your subject, making the viewer feel more "in the moment." I also prefer to use natural lighting and other methods (like a white board/reflection) over the use of a flash.

Equipment

When a butterfly is on the move, you have to be, too! My kids hollered at me from outside, so I quickly grabbed my Nikon D3200 with it's Nikkor Zoom lens (55-200mm).

Inspiration

My kids. I have three kids ages 5, 7 and 9. They notice everything. They have reminded me to take pleasure in the details of every-day life. I don't get the opportunity to travel to extravagant places, nor do I have the time to spend hours with my photo subject or sit in edit mode. My photos are the details of things I notice throughout my day; things most people would pass over without thinking twice. I try to capture what I feel when I first notice that detail. The sun on my child's face. The busy bee with pollen all over its body. The enjoyment and feeling of stepping into the lake water. The texture of wet sand. Each moment simple, but powerful. Even when we don't have much, we have enough.

Editing

Very little. As a busy mom, my time is limited for now. I try to keep my photos simple and as raw as possible. The only editing I do is to possibly enhance the color or lighting to make the subject matter stand out a bit more.

In my camera bag

My every-day bag consists of my Nikon D3200 camera, a Nikkor16-80mm lens, a Nikkor55-200mm lens, lens cloth, and battery charger.

Feedback

To capture details in the simple, every-day life, my advice is easy. Carry your camera with you everywhere! I usually only have two lenses in my bag to make on-the-go photo moments as simple as possible. I prefer the 55-200mm lens because it is small enough to carry around, yet zooms close enough to capture the details. When everything else in the background is out of focus, the details in your subject matter pop out with a passion! When taking photographs of moving subjects, I use the rapid-motion option to capture as many images of movement as possible. One shot is bound to be a good one, right? (laugh) My philosophy is simple. Simple life. Simple pleasures. Simple beauty. I am not a bells and whistles kind of person. I feel sometimes that over-edited photography can be distracting from the real beauty of the subject matter. That is not to say editing is bad! On the contrary, I enjoy those photos that take you to a place of imagination and fantasy! Every photographer is different. We all have different tastes, motivations, passions, talents, and goals in our photography. My goal is to capture details in the simple things. In a fast-paced world full of busy lifestyles, I enjoy slowing it down a bit; To one. Single. Moment.
