Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home, near one of the windows that faces a white-tin building behind my house.

Time

I always take this self-portrait style photo's around 3pm-6pm depending on the time of year.

Lighting

The white-tin building that is behind my house reflects the perfect colour and amount of light through the one bedroom window.

Equipment

I used my Nikon 5100 and the kit lens that it came with. I didn't use a tripod, but instead I used the window sill to keep my camera steady and at a good height.

Inspiration

I often take self-portraits every few months just to see how my face changes gradually over the years. I find it so fascinating to see how the face changes in just a few years, so by taking monthly photo's it is an easier comparison.

Editing

I did do some post-processing on this photo. Specifically I made the background to be a solid colour so there were no odd colours popping out in random places in the background, also so the face in the foreground was the main focus. I also adjusted the colours to be more prominent on the face, so it wouldn't looked washed out and plain.

In my camera bag

Since I am just in the beginning stages of being a photographer, I do not technically even have a bag yet! But, I do have a Nikon D5100 and the kit lens (18-55mm) as well as a 55-300mm lens.

Feedback

The best tip I have for others trying to capture something similar is to find somewhere with an abundance of natural light. For example, a large picture window in a bedroom or living room. Also, using a tripod or other sturdy surface so the photo will be free of blur caused by any shakiness.
