Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken on a quiet beach in Cornwall.

Time

Taken in mid afternoon, the weather was quite overcast and certainly not warm, however paddling a compulsory activity when you are nearly 5 and in love with the sea.

Lighting

I was out for the day with my son, my parents and our dog. This was a wonderful moment when he just stopped, captivated, looking out to sea.

Equipment

My trusty canon DSLR handheld.

Inspiration

I wanted a picture of my son and the sea. I liked the idea of him looking out to sea and this was simply how he was dressed that chilly day. I think the denim/braces/hoody combination adds a certain amount of traditional 'boyhood' to the scene and also lovely textural qualities. I love the fact that one trouser leg is higher than the other, such a natural innocence.

Editing

Although taken at the same location and time, the waves are from a different photo. The moment I captured this pose, including the water around his legs, there was not a wave in sight. I wanted the sea to look more poetic, so carefully cut, pasted and cloned the waves in. I also intensified the colours a little and used a hard light overlay to give the slightly threatening sky more depth.

In my camera bag

Just the camera. Shortly after this shot my battery died

Feedback

Try to avoid 'poses' simply having the camera ready and reacting to the natural behaviour of the subject. I got really lucky with this combination of factors too.
