Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Blackpool (United Kingdom), where I spent a wonderful time with my boyfriend. The decision about going anywhere was made the day before departure so it was a short and spontaneous trip. When we arrived, the place instantly appealed to me. Moreover, I was absolutely astonished by large amount of beautiful places. Blackpool is a city teeming with life. As I am a huge enthusiast of sunsets, it was a splendid place to capture sublimity of one of them. To be honest, thanks to this moment I got a feeling of nostalgia and serenity. Even though I am a self-taught, I did my best to portray it in an ideal way.

Time

Generally speaking, the day was very special to us. We did not have any occasion to spend our fourth anniversary together. That is why I came with idea of simply spending our evening on the beach at the same time admiring the view. As it was very hot during the day, I was sure that the sky as well as the sunset were going to be perfect. However, a process of capturing it was not that easy. The photo was taken on August 16, 2016.

Lighting

The most essential thing was to capture vitality of the sky and the sun that is why their colours were at the greatest importance. In order to make the sun and the sky look better, I had to crouch so things which were closer to me became darker. It enables viewers to focus their attention on the sunset at the same time noticing some interesting shapes. To achieve such composition, I decided to shot with ISO 100. That is why it looks alluring as well as slightly mysterious.

Equipment

I used my Canon eos 600D and Canon EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM lens.

Inspiration

I have always wanted to take a picture of a sunset, however, I have not had any opportunity to do this before. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right moment. Furthermore, my main aim of capturing it as it is was not only to show its beauty but also I wanted viewers to look back on carefree and the most memorable moments in their life. To be honest, I miss every place I have visited. I am inclined to believe that everyone who travels, knows that feeling of nostalgia and happiness. Such incredible places make us all smile and hope to be back there one day. What is more, travels broaden the mind that is why we should always seek for opportunity of visiting new places.

Editing

Of course, post-processing of the image was needed. First of all, I had to reduce noise and smoothen the photo a little bit. Then, I chose to make it darker, so at the same time I could obtain more clarity and details of the sky and the sun and get only shapes of these things that were located closer to me. Moreover, boosting saturation and contrast was required. The last step was to add a black vignette.

In my camera bag

I always have my Canon 600D body, Canon EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM lens, a charger, an USB cable and a few memory cards in my bag.

Feedback

Unluckily, the weather in England changes rapidly. If you desire to go to Blackpool and see the sunset, you must check the weather conditions first. What is more, patience is the key factor of getting the best end result. To my mind, when it comes to capturing sunsets, you must focus the whole action of the picture on the sun and the sky.
