Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my studio flat, near Paris. It was difficult because my flatlet is little and full of furniture and decoration, so I don’t have a big empty space to take pictures. Each photo taken in this room is a new challenge.

Time

The photo was taken on July, 28th 2016. It was in the afternoon to have natural lighting. I had the idea of this picture a few days before, thus, when i had time I took this picture.

Lighting

When I am at home, I don’t have a studio lighting kit so I prefer using natural light. There is a long window in my flat, so it is very convenient for taking pictures.

Equipment

 I used my Canon 600D, with a 38-76mm F.4.5-5.6 lens. I also used a wireless remote and a tripod.

Inspiration

My feelings and my emotions inspired me for this picture. I was not looking very good at this moment and was very stressed. I thought myself « you must transfer this bad feeling/energy into something artistic » then, I took this picture. The photo is about thoughts that spin in my head , because i have that so many times and it tires me.

Editing

Post processing is a part I like a lot about photography.  First of all, I clean the wall and add matter for having a big white wall behind me. Afterwards I cuts myself out (because i wasn’t in front of a wall in the initial photo) and add shadow. Then, i put every paper ball around me. Finally, I make the blue and dark atmosphere of the picture.

In my camera bag

Normally, I often shoot with my 50mm F1.4, but, I couldn’t have enough hindsight to use that lens for this self-portrait. I love the sharpness and quality of this lens.

Feedback

For a similar picture, think about the composition of your self-portrait a few moments before in order to have a better result. Then, shoot on a clean background, and after, the big part is the compositing on Photoshop. Let your creativity flow by adding some elements. The colorimetry is an important part of the rendering. Try to adjust lighting and colors in a way that matches your style the best.
