Every August, during Kadayawan, the biggest festival of Davao City, there are unofficial events that are just as interesting to see. This is the first time that I have seen this event--a race of the local "bancas" or boats called "bigiw". For the race, they are outfitted with a 16hp engine and customized outriggers. This photo shows the eventual winner--a former two-time champion--in the semifinals race.
