Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Dolomites, Italy, inside the Natural Park of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo near the "Forcella Lavaredo".

Time

We started to hike from the Rifugio Auronzo at around 15:00 pm, after realizing that a storm was coming together with dramatic clouds. So we reached the location in about 45 minutes. We waited in the location for about three hours and then the storm came. Fortunately we were near a gallery built in the WW1 that helped us to wipe and dry the lenses that were full of drops.

Lighting

I tried to catch some lightning without success, the light was yet too strong for having an exposure longer than 2 seconds. I've got something like 400 photos of this exact place shot one after another, and no one have a lightning.

Equipment

For this shot i used a Canon 6D with a 16-35 f4, with a Manfrotto 190 series and a plastic bag trying to cover the camera. Oh, and a kleenex to clean the lenses because i was too excited for the moment and wasn't able to find the micro fleece cloth that i always bring with me.

Inspiration

This is a situation that every landscape photographer would love to shoot, so i've been very lucky. The post processing is very important in images like this one, and is of course inspired by the fantastic images of Enrico Fossati, a very talented italian photographer.

Editing

The raw files, as always, were very flat, so I spent something like 3 hours to post process this image. I've blended 2 different photos to have the most from dramatic clouds i've seen during the storm. I've tried to give to the image a dramatic look darkening the whole image, except for the Tre Cime and the Sun, adding then a little of blue to the shadows and exalting the light hitting the Tre Cime.

In my camera bag

I always try to be the more light i can, so i bring with me only 3 lenses that permit me to cover all the focal i need. First of all i pack my Canon 6D, a light camera that for me is perfect. Then my dear Canon 16-35 f4, the Canon 24-70 f4 that's not mine, but my girlfriend always give it to me when i go for taking photos, and last but not least a Canon 70-200 f4. It's not a very expensive equipment (even considering that the 24-70 is not mine), you don't really need to spent too much to take good photos.

Feedback

The only advice i can give is to look for the worse situation you can find, the ones in which you would like to be at home, probably in the bed.
