Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my parents' garden in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I love photography and I always have my camera with me. That was why I could take this photo even if it was just happening in the garden.

Time

It was later in the afternoon. I knew there were some wild little kittens outside of my parents' house but I didn't see them coming into the garden area. However, we had the front gate opened so this curious little kitten wanted to explore the new place! I took a few pictures of it and it wasn't scared. It was actually walking towards my camera and me! This was taken August 4, 2016 at 5:23 PM.

Lighting

The sun was low so it was hard to catch the kitten with a slow shutter speed. It was moving around a lot so I had to wait until the kitten stop moving to take the photo.

Equipment

This was shot on a NIKON D610, with an AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm lens.

Inspiration

Taking pictures of animals are always a surprise to me because I never know what they would act. I love animals, especially the wild ones! Each picture of animals is always quite random. My goal is to show the character of the animal that I am taking picture of.

Editing

I cropped the picture a bit smaller since I took the picture with some extra space around the kitten to allow more light to get into the camera.

In my camera bag

I have an old Nikon D80 with an AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm lens. It has been with me for about 10 years. We have been to 27 countries together. Then I a few accessories to go with the camera. First, I have a ML-L3 Wireless remote control for slow shutter speed. Second, I have a HB-DL1 Bayonet Lens Hood to protect the lens from flare when shooting. Last, I have a cleaning set for my lens since it is really important to always keep your lens clean!

Feedback

All you need is patient for animal photography. It is better to have a camera besides you always and make sure the setting is right, specially the shutter speed! You want to make sure it is fast enough so the picture is not blurry. It is also great to have a zoom lens or a Telephoto/Superzoom lens. These lens are good for animals that are shy or dangerous. After you have the right equipment and settings, you just need to wait for the right moment and some luck for a wonderful animal picture!
