Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken as part of an "Old Hollywood Glamour" styled meetup shoot in Denver Colorado with the South Denver Sundays photo group. We were lucky enough to have a 2 to 1 photographers to model ratio for most of the afternoon. Were we lucky to have Casey Blatchford, the model in this photo, who was visiting from New York!

Time

Our shoot time ran from approximately 10:30am till 2pm. By 1pm most of us were tired and were started to fade. This shot was one of my last sets and was taken at 12:30pm

Lighting

This photo was lit using one Einstein with a beauty dish and diffused with a white cover. Final adjustment of the light before this shot was taken left it about 3 feet away from subject and about 2 feet above coming in from camera left.

Equipment

this image was shot with a Nikon D3200 (Red!). with the 55-200mm kit lens at a focal length of 55mm at ISO 100, f7.1, and shutter speed of 1/200sec

Inspiration

For this shot I was looking for something different that had been shot on this setup during this meetup as well as something that appeared elegant but modern. However, after asking Casey to rotate in the chair with her legs hanging over camera right side of the chair, I thought this pose was too good to pass by without taking the shot.

Editing

This photo has had some basic editing done in Lightroom with white balance, contrast, exposure as well as camera calibration settings. 90% of the time I use the camera vivid settings and is usually the first thing I adjust before making any other changes. After I was done with the edits in Lightroom, it was exported into Photoshop where there were some minor skin adjustments. Once these were done, the image mode was switched to 8bit and a smart object (this allows to go back and tweak settings to any filters once applied).Skin smoothing was done using Nik Color Efex Pro 4 and final black and white adjustments done in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

In my camera bag

In my photo bag, besides my Nikon D3200 (my only DSLR currently) I will have a combination of my 18-55 and 55-200mm kit lenses and a 50mm 1.8 prime. Since the prime lens does not have VR, it gets used sporadically.

Feedback

When I hear about a meetup that is coming up, or have an idea in my head that I would like to shoot, many times I will visit Pinterest for some posing, lighting, and other photography related creations that I can get some inspiration from and then then try and add my own twist onto them.
