Behind The Lens

Location

During a short vacation in the Dolomites, we have been told by local people about a spot where you can see steinbocks. After 5 hours of "extreme" hiking we got to the spot. Of course, no steinbocks there. We waited on top of the peak, but with no luck. While we were descending, fully camouflaged with the colors of the mountain, we saw a small group: 1 male (in the picture), 2 females and a young one. They let us get about 10 meters close, before showing us we were not welcome anymore.

Time

This picture has not been taken in the perfect moment of the day, from a natural light point of view. We hoped to see the animals early in the morning, but that was not the case. On our way back to the village (still a long way), at about 2 pm, we met them. We were already quite late according to our plan, but of course I spent half an hour taking pictures of these beasts.

Lighting

I have been lucky: sun was shining and the animal was quite. I just took a few pictures from different points of view, in order to get the best light.

Equipment

Nikon D90 + Nikon 16-85. I took this picture at 85mm, f: 5

Inspiration

Talking to people from that village. They told us where we could see steinbocks. We hiked, sweat, missed them. And finally we got our picture.

Editing

I use RAW format. Then I process with PS5. Just adding a bit of contrast, slightly harmonizing colors.

In my camera bag

I've just bought the Nikon 16-85. It is not extremely bright, but it is a reliable lens. It is not too heavy either. The alternative when I know I'll have low light is the Nikon 35mm f:1.8

Feedback

Enjoy the nature. If you don't see the animals that day, it will be during the next hike. And if you're so lucky to see them, just relax, stay away from them, enjoy the moment and let them get used to you. Then you can start slowly walking into their direction, until you feel you're not bothering them. This way, you'll also have pics taken from different points of view.
