Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken while walking in Chinatown, New York City. Shortly after a storm passed on a humid July afternoon.

Time

This photo was taken around 5 in the afternoon, with a burst of sunshine following a storm

Lighting

Minutes after a storm that made for a mostly overcast Sunday, the sun burst out, knocking out most of the shadows, and my hopes to do some street photography in a rainy SoHo. Left for a nice reflection anyways.

Equipment

This handheld shot was taken with my Leica CL 35mm Camera, and a Leitz Summicron-C 40mm 1:2 Lens, with Ilford FP4 125 ISO 35mm film.

Inspiration

I've always been inspired by reflections in my images that have a whole other scene, poking through a window. Rainstorms are perfect for that in my city, where pot-holes, sewer entrances are abundant. It allows you to see the historic architecture through a murky, dirty frame. I think could almost be a metaphor for NYC.

Editing

Because I shoot on film, but don't have any of the equipment to process negatives myself, I usually have my negatives processed for me, and scanned. But with that, I like to keep the photo as close to the original as possible, often only ever cropping slightly, or tweaking exposure.

In my camera bag

My camera bag is as busy as JFK airport. But it's most common contents would be my Leica CL 35mm Camera, accompanied by the Leitz Summicron-C 40mm 1:2, and Voigtlander 28mm 1:2 Lens'. Pired with the Leica CL, my Olympus OM-4 35mm Camera, with M. Zuiko 50mm 1:1.4, and M. Zuiko 180mm 1:2.8. And if not the olympus, then I like to carry my one (and the only necessary) digital Fujifilm X-T10, which i just just with the Metabonez M-mount converter to use with the Leitz and Voigtlander lens'. I use all types of film, because i like to experiment, but generally always have Ektar 100 ISO Color Film, Kodak 400tx (400 ISO) black and white film, and Fujichrome Provia 100f (100 ISO) Color Slide Film. I don't use any filters, and other than Lens cleaners that's my camera bag.

Feedback

If others like the look of natural, unstaged street photography, the only suggestion I can give is to always have your camera ready. I don't like to wait, or make others aware of my photos, so to capture a natural moment in time. In the case of this photo, I was truly looking to take a photo in a rainstorm, when it was interrupted by the sun. Sometimes I get excited to capture a situation (as most i'm sure do) and get focused on looking for that moment. The entire setting can change sometimes, and there will always be things that you can't control (with street photography anyways). And my only suggestion would be to always keep your eyes out. There's always an opportunity to give your unique perspective on an otherwise ordinary subject. This was just luck in timing.
