Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home in Zimbabwe. I headed into the garden with our new pup Jack, a cup of tea and my GoPRO. Trying out new angles and different settings, ever-curious Jack wouldn't leave the camera alone and Voila! This shot was captured.

Time

It was 7:12 AM on the 26th April this year (2016). Early mornings are the best time of day for me. The air is crisp, lighting is clear and sharp and puppies are full of energy! Jack and I were spending some quality time: him with me and I with him and my GoPRO and we snapped a couple shots, but this one is definitely my favourite.

Lighting

Just with it being early morning near the beginning of our winter season and at the end of our rainy season, the light is very sharp and clean and makes for crisp photos. All the African dusty haze that swirls our skies during the dry season has been washed away, allowing a tonne of light to reach us giving clean-looking photos like this one.

Equipment

This was shot with a GoPRO Hero 4 Silver attached to a mono pod. No other equipment was used

Inspiration

Having a new pet is always a good reason for a photo shoot. With their curiosity, playfulness and general 'cute-ness', they are bound to come up with some crazy facial or gorgeous expression. I wanted to see how well I could capture it with my GoPRO and this was the result.

Editing

The shot was initially a little dark for my liking so I increased the exposure in Photoshop. Other than that, I didn't change anything.

In my camera bag

Being a part-time videographer and amateur photographer, I have an interesting array of equipment in my bag. Always handy is my trusty GoPRO with an assortment of mounts. Next I have a Canon Legria Vidcam, with an aluminium compact monopod by Manfrotto. But then my most important piece of equipment is my Nikon D3200 with 2 lenses; an 18-55mm and a 55-200mm. Along with these I carry a Voyager Tripod, a couple of extra batteries for each camera, chargers, elastic bands (to keep sweeping shots steady in a pinch), cable ties and duct tape (you never know what you might need when on the job in Africa) and a leatherman.

Feedback

When shooting any animal, I have discovered that the GoPRO is pretty epic. With its' point-of-view shooting abilities, waterproof and hardy casing, it is the perfect camera to capture shots that are otherwise impossible to get with a normal camera (unless you don't mind getting your lenses licked or chewed and getting the camera down into the dirt). I tried a variety of settings and the best one was the photo time lapse, holding the camera very still for a few moments at a time to try get the best shot possible.
