Location
We had just purchased our first home and were moving in. As the sun was setting, I went to the field across the street. The light was so beautiful so I gathered up Teddy B, Roger and their wheelbarrow and took some test shots. These few test shots have become some of my favorite images.Time
This was taken during sunset in Southern California.Lighting
I use my bears Teddy B and Roger to practice my photography and I love the opportunity to practice lighting but specifically rim lighting. While learning lighting, I've started to look at things differently. I try to see how the light hits the tree, a branch or a bush.Equipment
Canon 6D and my 70-200mm lens and tripod. All natural light, no reflector.Inspiration
As I was just beginning to learn photography last year, I realized I didn't have little children around to practice on whenever I had time, so one night I went outside and put one of my teddy bears on a bike we had in the front yard. That got a lot of positive attention so I continued to photograph my bears Teddy B and Roger about town doing fun things separate and together. This started The Adventures of Teddy B. I was able to put together a short book of photos, each image with a little poem describing what Teddy B was doing. You can follow Teddy B and Roger and their adventures on Instagram @adventuresofteddyb. When shooting Teddy B and Roger, I shoot very low to the ground. It helps to keep my perspective correct. I've learned to see things in a smaller scale when looking for a location / background. Because the bears are so small, I can't shoot them next to tall objects and expect to see all of the object and the bears so I've had to learn to scale things down in size. I look at things from a different angle.Editing
I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC. I'm still very new to editing so I try to get it right in camera as much as possible. I'm also color blind so I'm very careful to edit without changing or adjusting the color too much. Being color blind definately has it's challenges but I think it's forced me to get it right first and not rely on the fact that I can "fix" my images after with the exception of adjusting my exposure. In my camera bag
I only have my Canon 6D but I'd love to purchase another camera. I tend to use my Tamron 70-200 lens all the time. But when I want to try something new or different, I'll use my Canon 1.4, my Sigma 35 1.8 or my Sigma 25-105 4.0. I don't know how to use anything fancy so this is about all I carry in addition to a few lens hoods.Feedback
The key for me is shooting something that I love. I've happened to stumble upon something that other people love and it touches their emotions. I shoot things that make me happy or inspire me. I've noticed that some of my simplist images are the best received. So don't over think it, don't over shoot it and don't over edit it. I also try to convey the words that feel best describe my work.....color, emotion and storytelling....in every image. If you haven't come up with your 3 words that best describe how you want your work to look, I would suggest you start there. There are lots of words out there...find the ones that best suit you. Lastly, when you have stumbling blocks along the way, figure out a way to get around it. I never knew how much color goes into photography because I don't always see it. I'm also dyslexic so learning has been very challenging. But when there's a will...there's a way. Follow Teddy B and Roger on Instagram at Adventuresofteddyb.
