Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a family outing in Gloucester, northeastern Massachusetts. This is an historic lighthouse on Cape Ann. I love traveling so every chance I have I get everybody in the car and go for a ride. It was one weekend before the school started again. I brought my camera with me as usual.

Time

This was taken at around 4 pm. I wasn't planning on doing that but I couldn't get to the lighthouse before noon. There was a festival in town that day and the traffic was insane. The light station is closed to the public because the road that leads to this point is private. It goes through a fancy neighborhood , with imposing houses and a yacht club. That day and at that hour the visitors were permitted to drive to the lighthouse.

Lighting

The light was nothing like I wanted to be. It was a bright, summer afternoon, with clear sky. This area is well known for its extreme weather conditions and many times the light is perfect, but it wasn't the case that day. I had to adjust the sky color in post processing.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel XS with a 18-135 mm lens. I couldn't use the tripod because there was a lot of activity on the pier. The spot is popular for fishing and on a summer day it gets overwhelmingly crowded, with kids and dogs running around. The pier is not wide enough to allow me to install my tripod. Besides, is out in the ocean where the wind gust gets pretty strong and couldn't take the chance to have my camera tipped over so I preferred to shot hand held.

Inspiration

I'm on a quest to Photograph all the Lighthouses in United States. So far I took photos of Maine lighthouses, New Hamsphire, Massachusetts, New Jersey and California. I'm only at the beginning but I'm thrilled bout it.

Editing

Because of poor lighting and holding my camera in my hand at the time of shooting, the initial RAW image was washed out and quite noisy. I used the noise reduction in Photoshop, twice. Once under filter, Noise, Reduction Noise, the second time in Camera Raw. I also used Color Efex Pro 4, Bi color filters to get some coloring in the sky and water. Because of this new applied filters, I've got more noise in the sky. To clean that up I used Gaussian Blur, at about 9 Radius. With this new layer I created a mask and with a brush I was able to bring back to life the lighthouse, the pier and the ocean water, while the sky received that smooth looking like look and no more noise.

In my camera bag

I always bring with me an ND filter although I didn't use it for this photo. I wanted to show the roughness of the Ocean. The ND filter would smooth that out.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to go where others haven't gone before. For this particular photo I stepped out onto some rocks, off the pier. I was at water's edge. Always trust your instincts and have the camera ready.
