Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo in my bedroom, so no where glamorous as the location had no significance so I didn't really put much thought into it.

Time

it was in the middle of the day/afternoon, a really nice day to, plenty of sun which I am always happy to see.

Lighting

Not really, for this photo I used natural light that came through my skylight windows. I used my room a lot because it was a very light cream which really softened it, otherwise I am inclined to use soft boxes but I was lucky that day.

Equipment

I prefer to keep things simple and use minimal stuff if its a possibility anyway. so for this photo I couldn't get my hands on the canon A1 so I used a Canon SLR I cant remember what model though.

Inspiration

I had my niece for the day and we always used to have random conversation depending on where her brain took her. this particular day she was telling me about her dreams. Hearing her dreams compared to mine or any body elses my age kind of reminded me of how innocent she still was, how simple yet bizarre her mind was, I just wish I could see what she saw so I played around with my own interpretation.

Editing

Processing was actually really fun as I wasn't sure it was going to work. I had opened the image up in photoshop and turn it black and white. I then played with my exposure to make sure it was on point and to reduce any harsh shadows that may have occurred, after that I upped the contrast for abit more definition before I finally inverted the image and printed off on plain A4paper. I cute the image out so it was just my niece and grabbed my dream catcher to take to the dark room. I placed the dream catcher on top of the gloss photo paper, I exposed it for a second then placed the image on top with a thick sheet of glass to avoid any stray light seeping under and exposed it for 2-3 seconds and developed the image.

In my camera bag

I always have my 50mm 2.8 fixed, 18-55mm zoom, and my canon obviously, as you can tell I'm a fan of Canon!! I also carry your standard flash which I try not to use and GND filters that's pretty much about it.

Feedback

Have lots of patients when exposing the paper to light as there is never any guarantees it will work first. you have to think of the density of the materials you use as that is was blocks the light so it may need longer or less if its thin like petals! also always use a sheet of glass preferably thick to way the objects and images down as that will stop them from moving and light bleaching the whole paper.
