Location
This photo was shot at Käthe-Kollwitz school in Leverkusen -North-Rhine-Westfalia (Germany), during a musical evening, where the music classes showed what they have learned in the past two years. This is the saxophone band consisting of both pupils and teachers. It´s not a professional stage and especially not a professionell lightning, so with that it's not easy to get fine shots.Time
It´s in the evening, because the parents and grandparents should have the chance to see their children play and sing on stage. Therefore I tried to get the shots without dusturbing the audiance.Lighting
As I mentioned above, we don´t have professionell lighting, the seen was illuminated by a spot light, but it has to much spreading, so the enviroment is illuminated too. I didnt´t use a flash, because it would have disturbed the mood and troubled the musicians and the audiance.Equipment
To be flexible I worked with a brigde camera (FujiFilm FinePix SL 1000), so I was independent from different object-lenses and I had the complete choice between zooms.Inspiration
Saxophone is my favorite music instrument, but I love not only the sound, I also love the golden appearance too. Therefore I went to the side to take pictures of only the instruments in line, I have some fine photos of it, then I wanted to take photos of the Sax band of our school, with teachers and pupils. So I made the shot.Editing
Normally I work with LR 6 to develop the raw shot, this time I also developed it with Silver projects . I intensified the contrast, so a lot of bright shimmery things were nearly extinguished, the remaining distracting light reflected on the right side of the photo I extinguished with paint. In my camera bag
It depends on my intention, I like to work with several bridge cameras for taking pictures outside. But I also work with a reflex camera, sometimes even analog. For landscapes I usually use a tripod. In forests I like to use extra light for macros, so I always carry a small torch in my bag. And in unknown areas I prepare myself maps, and I always try to be carefully arranged ( weather, direction of the sunlight, at what time is sunset or sunrise, where are good spots) but I´m always willing to change my plan.Feedback
Keep on moving to get the best perspective, if you are not sure, take severals shots and decide at home. Try to work without any flash if you want to capture the mood of the performance. It also helps to get some exquisite portraits of actors or musicians.
