Out of interest, where was this? I recently went to Elephants World in Kanchanaburi, which is a sanctuary for unwanted elephants. Absolute must visit! Other than learning how elephants are mistreated (logging, trekking, etc) we also learned there are sometimes good reasons for chaining an elephant.
