Location
This photo is from Thunder Cove Beach, on Prince Edward Island. I had seen the rock on travel sites and as soon as I landed I headed straight for this beach to try and find the rock and was so amazed when I saw all the other formations on the coast surrounding it and so many opportunities for creative framing.Time
I took this photo at sunset, my favourite time to shoot. It was my only opportunity during that trip to make it to that specific beach, and the lighting couldn't have been more perfect. Some friends and I drove straight from the airport and made it just in time for golden hour.Lighting
While exploring the beach, I noticed a hole in the rocks and saw the sun poking through at the perfect angle - I asked my friend Joceclyn to come model for me for a few minutes and as she got lost in the sunset I was able to snap this pic.Equipment
This was a Canon SL1 with a 10-18 mm lens.Inspiration
I love seeing framing opportunities in nature. I spend as much time as I can in the Rocky Mountains, and the opportunity to take pictures along coastlines excites me as there are new colours, shapes and reflections that I don't tend to see as often in my typical landscapes. I find adding a human element to landscape photos adds perspective and keeping the person's face anonymous allows the audience to see themselves in the photo, imagining themselves in that location.Editing
Yes, I made sure to add some contrast to make it a bolder silhouette. In my camera bag
I like to have my zoom lens (70-300 mm) and my wide angle (10-18) on me at any given time - the idea of having lenses that can present images different from what my eyes can see pushes me to be more creative.Feedback
Learn how to use your light metre! Silhouettes add a bit of mystery and beauty to an image and learning to use your camera's light metre can help create imagies like this one. Also, bring some friends along for your sunset/sunrise shoots, a lot of people don't take the time of day to appreciate this time of day and spending sunset with friends is never time wasted.
