I'll be honest, it's not an image I personally find to be wonderful. That's fine that it's not my thing, and that doesn't make it bad. In fact I've just been reading the behind the lens for this which was great. What I don't understand is that every time I upload male nude photos here, even when shot specifically for a challenge with that exact topic, it's removed within hours. No notification, no reasons given. It doesn't matter if it's studio with strong lighting, or outdoors with natural light. The challenge is still active, and best I can tell still has all the other entries. So I guess my question is... what's the secret to get Viewbug to accept male nudes?

I am a bit perplexed by you predicament; To date, I have not had any of my male nudes remove from this platform. This is about the only place on the web (aside from Flickr, or Twitter) where I've had no issues with my males - Male nudes are the thing I shoot most. This is the first I've heard of male figure images being targeted here at ViewBug. Were you careful to make sure that your images were marked as adult? I've had problems with other platforms making my images live before I'm through adding all the necessary labels (a practice that I suspect is purposefully designed to ensure that adult material producers can have at least one bad mark against them). I do nothing special to get my males posted other than double check Everything before I click "Save". As to the other thing, It's true: You are not required to like any image that passes by - you are entitled to your own take. I think it worth noting that ViewBug contacted me to write a 'Behind the Lens' on this image as it was far and away my most popular - which is actually surprising to me because even though I thought this image was worty of posting, I Never thought that it would become my most popular.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in a rental studio in Portland Oregon, where I met up with a guy called "iliketoshow" for an excursion into his affinity for being naked in front of the camera [or anything else].

Time

This image was actually part of the first group shot in this space at about 3:00P.M. on a Sunday, November 2015.

Lighting

The light from this shot came from my two Impact SF-ABRL160 w/s travel monolights, both fitted with the mini softbox option set on "full" [these lights have only two power settings: full and half]. This was pretty much what they used to call Standard Ballet Lighting; more or less equal power from both sides at fairly oblique angles. It is the same kind of lighting that vintage physique photographer Pat Milo used for most of his studio shots - Most notably in shots of bodybuilder "Golden Boy" Larry Scott in the late 1950s and early 60s.

Equipment

Shot this with my Sigma SD1 digital SLR and Sigma's 18-300mm stabilized lens. Most all of this shoot was hand-held with the two Impact monolight strobes with mini softboxes mounted on 6' stands.

Inspiration

We got into the studio and the first thing I noticed [it being my first time in this place] was the three distinct shooting areas: one white room with a roll-up door for daylight, one room with a hardwood floor plus a red wall and a black wall, and one long main space with a couple of 24" box platforms. I really wanted to shoot against that long wall because so many of my home shots were done in a much smaller space. Since we were there to shoot a more or less completely nude session, my model was already half out of his clothes and I stopped him from taking off his shirt. I just said: "get up on that box, and let's see what happens". In addition to wanting to work with a big model [about 6'3" in bare feet] for a change, I wanted to see how well I could light him AND his black shirt. We did a few of what I like to call Heroic poses, three-quarter turns and side views and then he turned and we focused on his huge legs and butt. He did a slight Sumo squat displaying his testicles and I noticed his ankle bracelet, so I framed off-center to put all of those noticeable elements into the one medium zoom shot. Apparently it worked.

Editing

I initially just output these images to color jpegs and spent some time trying to even out the differences between the two cameras I used on that day, the second being a Pentax K-3 digital SLR, in Lightroom®. Later, I wanted to have a collection of edits from the entire day-long session that could be presented as a whole. I fiddled around with some of free presets that I'd gotten from various web sources in order to make something that would at once remind me of some of my favorite darkroom photos, things done in the platinum process, and the old doutone shots from magazines like Physique Pictorial. Unfortunately, I lost that particular preset when the program crashed some months later. I have re-created a similar replacement but this particular one is definitely gone.

In my camera bag

These days, I walk around with a Pentax K-3 II [purchased only because my original K-3 was stolen. Otherwise, I'd still be carrying the K-3 with the Pentax 18-270mm] fitted with a Sigma 18-300mm zoom, which translates to 27-450 on the APS-C sensor. The camera gives great color. Sometimes I carry the Sigma as well but, I usually use that in studio for furniture product shots because that machine give great detail. Every once in a while, I'l throw in the two Impact strobes with their soft boxes because they really are that small - and an extension cord.

Feedback

I would urge anyone trying to create something similar [If I don't beat you to it] to strive for a little more dynamic lighting than what I've done here - ease up on one of your strobes for slightly more definite shadows and probably create a little more difference in height between your two sources. As far as the presets might be concerned - You're on your own: make that image appeal to you rather than strive for a carbon copy of mine. But above all that; Don't be Afraid of a Naked Man - Steer clear of Art Directed Fig Leaves; we all know that if there is a naked man in the picture, there are external genitals whether they show or not. The fact that a very large portion of my work involves the Nude Male and that I have been asked to give commentary on a very strong, very explicitly male nude image is evidence that people are less freaked out about the male body than when I first started making my photographs. Remember that you are working with a model that is very likely more angular and has a more obvious topography than the smoothness of the average female model: Light the bumps and ridges accordingly. The last thing that you want [unless it is your point to make fun, light-hearted tongue-in-cheek work] is to make your male coy: Don't give us Clara Bow. Give Us Spartacus.
