Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo street side during a parade! Extremely challenging in the aspect of trying to dodge people and other distractions to get the image you want.

Time

This particular photo was taken at around six o' clock in the evening around the first part of may. This is probably my favorite time of day to take pictures in because the lighting is usually fabulous!

Lighting

This lighting! Wow! Some of the best images are unexpected! It decided to POUR rain about a half an hour before I captured this image creating a dark, stormy diffused light. Which set off the colors of the vehicles beautifully! The rain made the paint seem shimmery and the dark color of the sky produced a wonderful contrast.

Equipment

At the time I was using my Canon 60 D body with the 18mm-55mm lens. I prefer not to shoot with a flash and just a much raw, natural light as possible. And due to the crowds of people I didn't carry a tripod with me.

Inspiration

I absolutely loved the paint color on this truck. The color in contrast with the dark sky was definitely my inspiration!

Editing

I did do some post processing on this image because the original had some distractions (power lines and people) that I felt took away from the photo. I removed the power lines and people using Photo Shop Elements 10.

In my camera bag

I always have my main camera body (Canon 60D) and my 18mm-55mm. I also have a 18mm-35mm lenses with me and my external flash in case my adventures take me into a dark area with limited lighting. Always, always pack multiple cards! And never shoot an entire session on one card! If you break one, or it happens to be faulty, at least you have half a session. I prefer to pack lighter just because it can be an energy drainer to pack a ton of gear and you could be putting that energy into your photos.

Feedback

Lighting is your friend. Use it! It makes for such unique pictures when you use natural light because it is different every time. I could go to the same location that I took the photo of the truck at the exact time and it would be different. Roll with the lighting. Know your camera well enough that you don't miss a perfect lighting moment, and experiment for different effects! It really can make or break you photo!
