Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the secondary highway between Calgary and Canmore Alberta. I'm new to the DSLR world, so although I've had a camera since I was 7 years old, getting this new camera to take the image I want has generally taken a few tries. This shot though, pure dumb-luck! Being at the right place at the right time!

Time

My man and I decided to go on a mini roadtrip to Banff with a stop for breakfast in Canmore. We slept in a little more than we meant to so we got on the road around 8:45. We decided to take the back roads, even though it's longer because it's so quiet and peaceful. From a distance I saw this little church is never noted before and we pulled over around 9:15 to check it out.

Lighting

I'm usually not a fan of a solid blue sky, I prefer the texture of some clouds for most of my shots. However in this case the particular way the sun rays filled the top corner and gave something to look at made me instantly fall in love with the clear sky. The fence shadows added depth to the pathway. The brightness of the background causes the smaller mountains to almost fade away while making the church stand out.

Equipment

This capture was done with my Canon EOS Rebel T5 camera with my 18-55mm lens. I used my landscape setting but ended up with an aperture of 11/1, ISO 100 and exposure 1/250. I've since been back to this location and done some shots on Tv and Av modes trying to learn more about how to get the effects I want in a raw photo.

Inspiration

This picture was inspired by pure fluke. I didn't know the site even existed but saw it and we knew we had to pull over. The shadows, the prairie meets mountains landscape and the particularly sunny day ended up inspiring one of my favorite pictures I've had the privilege to capture. It really does pay off to pull over and enjoy the little things in life.

Editing

I left this photo alone after I took it and didn't make any adjustments. I think it's perfect the way it is!

In my camera bag

Since I've just started out into the world of DSLR from point and shoot, my bag isn't that well stocked (yet). I've got my Canon Rebel T5 body, the standard 18-55mm lens and a standard 75-300mm lens. Also because I'm known to take a lot of shots, I always make sur wi have an extra memory card, just in case I get out of hand!

Feedback

Unlike lots of shots I take this one wasnt premeditated. Te site was a surprise and though it's someone's tempting to drive by because we are in a hurry, it Is advisable that we forget our schedules sometimes and break out the creativity when the moment strikes. If you see something you think is beautiful, interesting, different or inspiring, stop. Just stop. Don't think twice! Stop and take a moment to breathe, frame your picture and *snap*. There's no better feeling than realising you've taken a great photo, that you want to share with the world because you took the time out of your day to simply enjoy what's in front of you!
