Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was Taken at Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland. This was my very first Photography trip and to have gone to this beautiful, scenic country in my very first year of taking up photography, helped lay a foundation for a love of landscapes that will never diminish.

Time

I remember getting here and being truly awe inspired. To stand and witness Gullfoss is to gaze upon a force nature in a very raw, powerful and glorious state. I must of just walked up and down beside it 7 or 8 times in wonderment of its sheer verocity. I remember not even taking my camera out for an age, well not until one of my friends shouted "its getting dark soon , shoot something" which reminded me of the time passing by swiftly and it was almost 5.p.m. in October 2014.

Lighting

At this point, shooting waterfalls was extremely new to me. I struggled at this falls immensely. Further behind from where this image was taken, the spray from the water and the wind was constant, further beyond was the same, also it did not help its coming close to nightfall to. I choose here as it gave protection, not completely, but just enough to shield from both sides to allow a longer exposure to take more light from an already pretty clouded sky. It also gave to me, What I felt was, a more personal shot.

Equipment

I had just upgraded from a Olympus epl-3 for this trip to what was used for this picture. A rebel t3i (600d) with a Tamron 10-24 f3.5-4.5. 2 graduated hi-tech filter, 0.9 and 0.6. and a Benro tripod. And most importantly a microfiber cloth to constantly be cleaning spray from the filters.

Inspiration

It was busy, windy, getting dark and there was misty spray blowing every where. This is an awe inspiring water fall and I had seen pictures of her before I every got to stand in her presence Despite the conditions that evening, I just wanted to leave there with an image that made me fell like I was as close as I possibly get to such powerful falls. That despite the hordes of visitor there that day that I came home with an almost "this is my own personal water fall" picture.

Editing

Shooting in raw and honestly not knowing about much about editing at the time this was processed in Photo Shop. No masks were used however simple processes were repeated many times, such as adjustments in selective colour, curves and brightness. Clarity was upped and then tonally reduced down lowering noise.

In my camera bag

I'm still considered the Newbie to my group and my gear reflects that, however, and I do now love being like this , I for sure have the lightest low pro sling which makes for easier hiking when the rest of my mates are dragging. I carry my 600d body ( now a trusty back up) a 7d with my trusty Tamron 10-24 f3.5 - 4.5. Sigma 17-55 f2.8 Canon 70-300 f4.5- 5.6. 3 x batteries for each camera. Hi-tech filters at 0.3/0.6/0.9. Shutter release. A few cloths and because us Photographers stand around a lot, I always have a hat and gloves.

Feedback

Honestly with this one for me it was Patience, its a must and after that if the weather isn't on your side then its pure perseverance. I didn't take my camera out for ages here, I relayed back and forward for more than an hour, waiting for winds to change and flow of people to becoming less regular. After the camera was taken out and set up it may have been almost another 45 minutes before I got the shot I wanted. Waiting for that cloud to allow that last breath of light through and make sure all the spray was removed from the filters completely by constantly wiping them down, but a no point did it every feel like it was 2 long because I knew if I waited just long enough all I needed was a 10-15 second break and the knowledge that I tried my best.
