This picture I have named "Life and Death" is one of many that I shot at an Allotment in Plymouth. I was studying the first year of my degree and my dad died in March that year. In grieving for him I wanted to make something to remember him by. Some of my fondest memories are of myself as a very small child, helping dad in the garden. He would spend hours digging and planting, sowing and weeding. The project I undertook was about the continual cycle of life, and the activity and the love that's needed to nurture nature. This project was about emotion and memory, not of technical ability.Time
I'm not able to tell you exactly the time of day this was shot. Throughout the year, I visited and took photographs at all times of the day. But if I had to guess, I'd say that this particular image was taken in the morning.Lighting
I love natural light, the best time of day to photogrog is the early morning and that magic hour before the sun sets. But if you don't like getting up early then the best advice I can give is to always avoid mid day when the light is white and too stark. The early morning and late afternoon will give you some wonderful hues and more depth of colour.Equipment
Digital Image shot on Nikon D40 ISO200, no other equipment, camera was hand held.Inspiration
Inspired by my dad who loved gardening, in memory of him. After his death, I visited the allotment for a year to capture the seasonal changes and the cycle of life and death.Editing
There is no editing on this image. It is as it was taken in camera,In my camera bag
I shoot on Digital and I love Film cameras. If I'm shooting with film, I usually carry a light meter with me. I don't carry a lot of equipment because I like to go for long walks; I don't like carrying too much weight around with me.Feedback
I think images are better if there is a story or some emotion attached to it. You can take a beautiful picture, but if there is a reason for that picture, in my opinion, it makes it more interesting.
