Location
This photo was taken in an abandoned grain shed on a farm where I grew up, it was falling apart, infested with bats and home to some very outdated farm machinery and chemicals.Time
The photo was taken around 1 or 2 in the afternoon in Fife Scotland. As we had done some shooting outside in the woods as well.Lighting
There was no artificial lighting. I did not use my flash, and there was no lighting in the shed. It was around 100 years old and had no wiring that worked. The only light was from the door you see in the picture, a couple of holes in the floor where the wood had rotted away and from some very old and very dusty windows along the side of the building.Equipment
I didn't have a lot of money to splash on a camera, so I only had a Panasonic Lumix FZ45. Nothing special, but I used a 5.0mp kodak when I first started and everyone has to start somewhere, I used no tripod, no lenses, just the bog standard camera.Inspiration
I had always been a fan of artistic nudes. I am not a lover of full frontal, everything exposed nudity. I decided to try and take some myself. This model trusted me to take these photos and has a copy of them. And I loved the idea of playing with the shadows and hiding the naughty-ness shall we say and tried to encapsulate the beauty, the raw power of the naked form, without unveiling too much.Editing
I usually try and tweak my photographs as little as possible. I use a basic programme called Picasa. And all I usually do is tinker with the shadows and lighting to bring forth the picture I saw when taking it as the camera may not capture the essence of the image I wanted. I very rarely heavily edit my photographs. I try to keep them as natural as possible as I think when post-processing becomes too heavy it makes the photograph less realistic and destroys the true natures of what a photograph is supposed to be, the moment, the raw image. In my camera bag
The first thing I do, is always make sure the battery is charged, many a time I have been caught with poor charge and missed an opportunity to take a once in a life time photo. I always carry a waterproof satchel that holds everything, my camera, lenses, cleaning cloths and sprays. I like to go to areas other people have not been or maybe have not seen the photo I want, so I carry, believe it or not two mountain climbing axes. I have a long 4 foot one to walk with and to check how deep water is, as I love to get in and around to take a photo. I also carry a handheld one to dig into the side of ledges and tree's to try and get the angle or photo I want. I usually wear clothes that are old, so I can get dirty, wet and whatever else the world can throw at me. I also carry a couple of SD cards, as I get so trigger happy I can take thousands of photos when i am out and about, but they usually get narrowed down to 100 or so when I get home as you never know what gem you could find.Feedback
I started out as a teenage on the summer holiday with a 5mp Kodak camera, and it grew from there, I took some stunning images with that camera. A photo is only as good as the photographer, a good camera does not always help. Be original, never try to copy someone else work. I tried and discovered my own path. I love nudes, nature, landscapes and urban photography as you will never get the same image twice, there is so much beautiful wildlife and scenery out there to make your photos your own. Patience, I never thought I could be good, but through websites like this and patience, you learn what works what doesn't and people are always willing to help as they share your passion. Don't be afraid to get dirty, don't be afraid to go places you're not, I once scurried my way into an abandoned train station to get photographs. So, be yourself, be unique and take as many photos as you can, you'll soon learn what you like and love.
