Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory, on Melville Island, in the Nunavut Territory of Canada. I was there conducting scientific research as part of my Master of Science degree at the time, and the area was home to a pack of several wolves who frequently visited us in the field.

Time

This photo would've been taken in the early afternoon sometime. In the high Arctic during the summer (this would have been taken in I think July), the sun never sets. It is bright as day for 24 hours for most of the time we are there.

Lighting

Lighting wasn't a issue due to the 24hr daylight and it happened to be a sunny, clear day.

Equipment

I use a Pentax KS2 camera with a simple 70 - 200 lens. Sometime I use a tripod, but only when doing nighttime or timelapse work.

Inspiration

Everything about the Arctic, from the landscape, the animals, the history, the remoteness, the fact that only a small fraction of people get to experience it, everything there is inspiring for anyone. I was there for research, but every trip there I make sure

Editing

I decided to go black and white with this photo because there were some very deep shadows that I really like. I edited a colour version as well, but there was something I really liked about this version. I use Lightroom 3 for post-processing.

In my camera bag

Camera. Extra battery and memory cards. 2nd lens, with additional fish-eye lens. Binocular strap instead of the regular single camera strap. I find it's much more practical for all the hiking involved in my work.

Feedback

Don't try to get too close to wildlife. A good zoom lens will do that for you, and you can sit back and be still so you don't spook them.
