Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the local dance studio after-hours, it isn't big or fancy but was perfect for casting a shadow on the back wall, had to take down a couple frames and pictures hanging on the wall though.

Time

It was 7 or 8 at night on a Sunday so the parking lot and studio were practically abandoned, letting me to do what I wanted.

Lighting

Since the lights in the actual studio were up high and fluorescent it was rather dark, and produced very poor quality images. So I brought in these two old construction type lights that sat on the ground with long extension leads. This allowed me to aim the bright light any way I wanted, so I could cast the model's shadow on the wall.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600D, a standard 18-55mm lens. A Velbon Tripod and shot on raw.

Inspiration

The inspiration behind this photo was my grandma. She was a beautiful ballet dancer and dancing was her legacy. She sadly passed away recently and through my sister as the model wanted to bring her dance and free spirit back to life . I wanted to capture that beauty everyone posses but doesn't show.

Editing

I heavily used post-processing, I took a photo of the model posing with her arms up and used the lights to cast a shadow on the wall which was separate from her body so I could easily cut it out later in photoshop. And then took a photo of her arms positioned downwards with the light positioned so there was no shadow cast on the wall. But like the idiot that I am, I didn't take a base picture of the background. So when it came to photoshop I couldn't just cut out the model and shadow of the two pictures and put them on a background. I instead cut out the image of the model with her arms down and put it on top of model with her arms up and used the clone tool to fix up any mistakes that didn't look right. - This was my first time properly manipulating an image, so I am not at all experienced with photo shop.

In my camera bag

I am student and an amateur so I don't really have much equipment, It is basically a Canon 600D, my go to 18-55mm lens and my Velbon tripod. Plus a couple spare SD cards, a charger and remote trigger. Nothing super fancy but it works for me.

Feedback

Its pretty easy, even I managed to do it. Just make sure its an enclosed studio space, so no windows (or at least covered up windows) so that your lighting stays the same. Take two different photos using a tripod of what you want to merge together, and REMEMBER a base image of the background, it will make life so much simpler when editing. Also side note - since it was kinda dark in the studio and I made it lighter use physical lights, not increasing the ISO I find it makes my pictures more grainy.
