Behind The Lens

Location

Standing on a ladder at my back door at my home in the Daintree rainforest as the female was building her nest on a tree fern leaf hanging over my roof

Time

It took the female Yellow-Bellied sunbird three days all up to build her nest, at around 11am on the second day I managed to capture this shot after about 200 other exposures as the light suddenly changed for the better

Lighting

It took a long time for the light to be just right, in the early morning the bird and nest was in shadow and in the afternoon the sun in your eyes, So for an hour around mid day was the best time to shot

Equipment

NikonD600 with a 500mmm sigma lens, 1/1600 sec, iso2500, f8

Inspiration

Living in the rainforest brings a lot of opportunities for bird and other wildlife photography. I was hoping to show the stages in images of the sunbirds building the nest through to feeding the young when born, however as is common in nature the nest did not last long enough as the fern leaf it was attached to broke. So I will wait till next spring and hopefully have the opportunity to try again.

Editing

No, I only had to crop the image slightly to centre it better

In my camera bag

Nikon camera, a 60mm Nikon macro for those tiny critters that are everywhere, 10mm to 24mm Nikon wide angle for landscape, 70mm to 300mm Nikon for animals and 150 the 500mmm Sigma for the birds

Feedback

Lots and lots of patience, fast shutter speed, and a bit more patience
