Even on a wet rainy day there is beauty in nature

The power of water & the colours of the Maratoto River is flood is quite something

Macraes Mine is a big open cast Gold mine in Otago NZ. I loved the way the shadows & highlights stood out down the side of the pit

Macraes Mine is the largest open pit gold mine in New Zealand. Taking a differing photo to everyone else was the challenge

While doing a road trip around the East Cape I came across many scenes like this.

During a recent road trip I came across this old Dairy factory. It has been vandalised but still made for some great HD B&W photography

Location

Photo was taken at Waihi Beach, New Zealand on a stormy Autumn day

Time

This photo was taken early afternoon. I don't usually do landscape photos at this time of day as lighting is usually flat. But when I saw these steps and the background clouds I just knew it was workable as a moody black & white

Lighting

This particular photo is was just a case of grab the opportunity between blustery showers. I did it in black & white in order to keep the moody feeling

Equipment

Now this part is the laugh & proof that one doesn't need top gear to get a good photo. Due to the wet stormy weather I had left my SLR and lenses at home & just had an old very basic Canon point & shoot in my pocket. I saw the potential shot & snapped it in the fleeting minutes of no rain.

Inspiration

I just loved the moody stormy look. Hence I named this one Stairway to the storm. It has been a very popular photo

Editing

I changed it to black & white in Silver Efex and added a touch of graininess. Having been taken with a point & shoot it already was a bit grainy but in this case it was beneficial

In my camera bag

Normally I have a backpack with a Canon SLR and various lenses & filters but on this particular day I only had a old Canon point & shoot as I did not want to risk my expensive equipment in the weather. The point & shoot fitted in my raincoat pocket..my SLR would not

Feedback

Grab the moment. Run on instinct. Don't overthink or get too technical because by then the moment/opportunity is lost forever.
