Location
This picture was taken at the main Bridge Foot intersection in Warrington, Cheshire.Time
This was taken around 8pm as the sun had set, I'd parked nearby and waited for the sun to disappear. I have other pictures from the same time with the sun setting to the right of the image.Lighting
The sun had not long set, so I waited until the sky was just turning a deep blue. The box was illuminated by a very high street light, so it was bright enough to show detail but not too close to throw flare across the lens.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon EOS70d and a 10-18mm EFS lens. As it was going dark and I was taking multiple exposures to merge to HDR, the camera was tripod mounted.Inspiration
As the phonebox it situated on a main road junction into the town, it's somewhere I pass pretty much every day. I'd photographed it in daylight a year or 2 ago and was never quite happy with the image. I happened to come passed late at night and liked the way the street lights illuminated it, so decided to return on another evening.Editing
The 5 individual images were merged in Photomatix and processed to black & white in Lightroom. In my camera bag
If I'm travelling light, I generally take my 10-18mm lens and the 18-55mm kit lens with my Canon EOS70d. My tripod is always in the back on my car.Feedback
If taking pictures at night, don't wait until the sky is completely black. Even in black & white the sky seems to come out better while there is still some light left. Look all around the subject for different viewpoints, bend down, stand on something, get up close with a wide-angle lens. For me, my photography is not about faithfully representing what the eye sees, but taking it further. This image was taken very close with a 10mm lens so the perspective is accentuated.
