Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Davenport Beach, CA, USA.

Time

It was a warm, but gloomy Sunday. When we got there, the sky above us was really clear, but the horizon, as you can see in the photo, is really cloudy. The picture was taken at around 6:30PM, an hour or two before sunset.

Lighting

It was all natural light. The sun was coming down on the model right, at around 70-80 degree.

Equipment

This picture was taken with a Canon T6s and a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. ISO 100 43mm f/2.8 1/4000

Inspiration

I asked her to stand (safely) by the cliff and kinda look out the the water, in a dreamy way, with her body relaxed. I took a few shots from regular eye level, but decided to go down for a more unique angle. Intentionally got some plants blurred out in the foreground. She was wearing a red hat and a blue and white polka dot backpack. The picture was taken on June 4th, a month before July 4th, the Independent day. Her outfit kind of resembled the USA flag and that's what inspired me.

Editing

This picture was post processed completely in Lightroom. I cropped it down from a 2:3 landscape to a square 1:1, using Phil Grid. In the original photo, the model is pretty dark, as I exposed for the background. So I had to bring up the exposure on her body and lift the saturation of the background.

In my camera bag

At the point of taking this photo, I had a Canon T6s, a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8, a Canon 55-250 f/4-5.6, and a Canon 24 f/2.8, with no light modifier or whatsoever. I've just recently added a flash and a 43" 5-in-1 reflector.

Feedback

Along the West coast, there are many places that you can come up with a similar picture like this. You can substitute the foreground with different objects for a more unique look. Remember to check the weather, as it's changing really fast and most of the time, you should be able to get the cloudy, softbox sky.
