Location
I made this photo here at my home studio in Long Beach, Mississippi.Time
This was taken during the day around 430PM Cst or so.Lighting
Lighting used was an Alien Bees 800 at low power via a 22" silver beauty dish. I used an Nikon SB700 behind subject gelled for added affect. Her hair color was untouched as this is how she normally colors her hair.Equipment
Camera was a Nikon D7100 with Nikkor 85mm Prime.Inspiration
I had seen some folks locally using gas masks in their shoots. I wanted to try something a bit darker. I had some insulation panels from a previous shoot that were made to look like a paddes room. The model I worked with has many outfits like these and has a great look for dark themes. The story is a psychotic young woman locked in a padded room. Shes twisted and loves to play dress up. She must wear the mask as it gives her comfort. So here shes trying to be pretty for the camera. But being mentally insane it comes off more scary than sweet.Editing
Post processing was minimal as at the time my photoshop skills were lacking to say the least. Im partial to very sharp grungy images so I mainly played with Clarity and Sharpness. In my camera bag
Currently I have the following: Nikon D750 SB700 Some Yongnuo speedlights and 2 AB800s Nikkor 35 1.8 Nikkor 50 1.8 Nikkor 85 1.8 and an older 55-200 5.6 Various modifiers.Feedback
I would say dont be afraid to be creative. Sometimes, some might tend to hold back for various reasons. Will other like my work, will they get my story etc. Be true to your vision and the rest is just icing on the cake. I was hesitant to put this and other images like these out there because I sid not want to scare away any potential clients. The typical family portraits, weddings etc. But I noticed once I uploaded this image on Facebook even the "vanilla" or more conservative viewers liked or even loved it. They either loved the lighting, colors or theme. There was something for everyone. I was shocked but also encouraged to continue to shoot what I love. Now its been selected by the fine folks at Viewbug and im thankful.
