Location
Nestled in the hill country of Texas lives the wild animals of the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.Time
We arrived right at the opening of the park to be the first to see the animals, enjoying their morning meals.Lighting
When your subject has defined black and white areas like a zebra, be careful with spot exposure. Make sure to expose for both the back and white; spot expose in-between stripes or on his tongue :) to avoid over or under exposure.Equipment
Nikon D750 with a prime 50 lensInspiration
I think this zebra wanted us to throw food in his mouth. I was laughing so hard I'm suprised the photo came out at all!Editing
I used Lightroom to turn it black and white; and then photoshop fill:content aware, to remove a piece of grass from his teeth (floss!)In my camera bag
I love prime lenses right now, I'm still building my business and prime is the best bang for the buck. I'm actually in Iceland right now and I have three primes with me: 28mm, 50mm, and 58mm. They have so far been perfect!Feedback
As a newly educated photographer I tend to get lost in the camera details, trying to get the perfect settings, missing the forest for the trees. Settings are important, but what's in front of the camera is more important. Exposure or white balance can be changed in lightroom, but a smiling zebra is a fleeting moment in time. As I like to say, shoot first, as questions later :)
