Location
This photo was taken in Hoi An, Vietnam on a month-long backpacking trip from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. Hoi An is a coastal city in central Vietnam and one of the few cities where a lot of buildings survived the war. It was taken from the bridge near the market where the lady was going to sell her wares.Time
As life starts early in Vietnam, I got up at 4:30 am to watch the sunrise and observe the local life before the large groups of tourists arrive. This photo was taken at 6:20 am local time.Lighting
As you might notice the lady covers her eyes from the sunlight coming from behind me. As it was after golden hour the light was quite harsh, as the weather was clear and the sun was still low. The sunlight shined trough the opening under the bridge below me. I like the directional light as it guides your eye to the lady.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon D5100 and a 85mm 1.8 prime. No other gear was used.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photo came from a viewing a photo exhibition of Réhahn. I like simple photographs with beautiful light and composition which depict the life of local people.Editing
Almost no post-processing was done, except some basic tweaks in Lightroom. In my camera bag
I like primes very much and that's why I almost always carry a 35mm 1.8 and a 85mm 1.8. I find those lenses to have very nice characteristics on my crop sensor camera. I like the contract, colour rendition and sharpness these lenses produce, especially at their price point. For wider shots I also carry a 18-55mm kit lens, but primes are my favorite.Feedback
My advice would be to always be ready and have patience. At this specific instance I saw the lady on the boat traveling towards me and I knew at a certain point the light would hit her just right and the composition would be spot on. So I prepared for that moment and took the photo. It helps to envision the photo before it happens, especially with a prime lens as zooming is not possible. Don't worry too much about technical settings, you should have them down, and concentrate on composition and lighting.
