This beautiful mom and son were photographed in their home in Austin, Texas. Her son was less than a month old and home was the best option for their shoot. We used the natural light in my client's gorgeous dining room and were able to capture some wonderful memories.Time
We followed the newborn's schedule and photographed him in the late afternoon (around 5pm) when he was nice and sleepy. The light was perfect from the windows. By 7pm we were able to go outside to do some sunset photos with the family.Lighting
I really wanted to focus on the shadows while highlighting the newborn. I adored the window lighting so I positioned them to get beautiful shadows on the mom's face while ensuring the baby was the main focus. I love how the lighting makes this photo speak.Equipment
This was shot using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi with a 50mm Canon lens. No flash or tripod was used because I really wanted natural light and wanted to get a ton of different angles.Inspiration
I really wanted to express an emotion with this shot. I hope it portrays the love this mom feels for her newborn boy, and the safety he feels while in her arms. I love portraiture. I love newborns. I love family!Editing
I love to post-process because that is the digital darkroom! That is where photos come to life and become art. I began with a 35mm camera and started in the darkroom at Texas State University where I minored in photography. It is an amazing thing to bring a moment to life; that is what post-processing means to me. I changed the tone, darkened areas, and lightened others. I love the finished product. In my camera bag
I always have my trusty Canon Rebel body and Canon 50mm 1.8 prime lens in my bag. I also always carry my Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens which I use a majority of the time. If I am doing something outdoors with beautiful landscapes, I may use my Canon 70-200mm 2.8 Telephoto lens but I don't usually carry it.Feedback
Look for beautiful lighting and don't be afraid of it! Try different settings (ISO, Aperture, Shutter) until you like what you see. Make the light tell a story. I positioned the baby directly in front of the window and angled the mom until I loved the light on baby and the shadows on the mom. I highlighted the baby and darkened the mom and corners in post-processing until it spoke to me.
