My aim for the series that this image is taken from is to build a collection of natural portraits. I have captured visual signs of physical and emotional strain, by spending time at competitions and training sessions. Constructing an environment free from distractions and preconceptions was obtained by photographing my sitters against a black backdrop. Spending time getting to know the sitters stories resulted in less physical awkwardness and intimidation created by the camera. The portraits are made before, during and after performances and show the ungaurded, reflective moments. Their expressions and body language articulate their concerns and meditations over upcoming and past competitions.
