Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Hawaii in 2007. The half-mile long Wilcox Tunnel on the island of Kauai was originally built after World War II and was used by large trucks to haul sugar cane from a mill on the other side of the mountain. While the tunnel is no longer in use today, it was of great value in its heyday, cutting many miles and a great amount of time off the drive from the mill. Today, it's main use is for sightseeing.

Time

This photograph was taken in the early afternoon. The trees framing the road and tunnel provided nice shade so the sun wasn't blaring in.

Lighting

The lighting for this shot was completely up to nature. No flash, no thought about what could possibly make it better. I truly just pointed the camera, focused the lens, and snapped the photo.

Equipment

This was shot with my Canon Rebel XTi with an 18-55mm lens. Since I was on my honeymoon on the "other side of the world" from home, I had no tripod, extra flash, or any other equipment. Just me and the camera.

Inspiration

This picture was taken while cruising around the Hawaiian Islands on my honeymoon. My husband and I had booked shore excursions at every port, and we were enjoying the chance to drink in every little bit of the Hawaiian paradise we could. On a "Land and Sea" shore excursion in Kauai, we were taken to this interesting location and allowed to get out of the van and look around. It truly was an interesting place with the man-made tunnel surrounded by the lush greenery and the tall skinny trees above. I snapped a lot of photos from various angles, but this one was my favorite, with the light showing at the far end of the tunnel.

Editing

I truly am a novice with my photography. I have a creative mind and a decent eye, but I wouldn't even begin to know what to do or how to go about any post-processing. Any good-quality images I capture are "happy accidents".

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon Rebel XTi body, an 18-55mm lens, and a 70-300mm lens. Anytime I go out to take pictures, I find myself switching back and forth between the two lenses, hoping to capture that next wonderful picture with one or the other.

Feedback

Great photo opportunities are everywhere. Have the camera ready to shoot lots of angles and vantage points of the things that catch your eye. Take close-ups, then zoom out and get the surroundings as well. While shooting this image, I made sure to focus in on the tunnel itself, then pulled back and got the plants and trees around it. Thinking outside the box often makes for a much more interesting picture.
