Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken while out for a walk with my wife in Venice. We were on our 13th year Anniversary. I had promised her a day without my Camera. But i just could not help taking this with my iPhone, just as the Gondola came into the light. She spotted me, rolled her eyes, gave me a kick and then laughed. I treated her to an extra nice lunch and kept my phone in my pocket for the rest of the day. It turns out that this was her favorite image from our trip!

Time

This was taken just after lunch, around midday in 34 degrees heat!

Lighting

What i love about this scene was the way the natural sunlight shone between the buildings, giving a great stage for the Gondola. And the silhouette of the gondolier in the background. I hd to buy myself some time waiting for it to get into position.

Equipment

I normally use a Sony A7R11 but this was taken with my iPhone 6.

Inspiration

I was inspired to take this photo literally because of the light. I had to pretend to do my laces up, so i could wait for the right moment. But my wife worked out what i was doing and gave me a little kick ;-)

Editing

I processed this in Lightroom. Mainly adjusting the White balance, shadow, clarity, and vibrancy. But not too much. An image from an Iphone is easily spoiled in processing.

In my camera bag

I normally use a Sony A7R11 with my Gmaster 24-70, a Zeiss 16-35 and my trusty tiny zeiss 55mm. A variety of filters, remote trigger, several spare batteries and memory cards. Oh and a bottle of water a chocolate bar. I also have a Carbon Manfroto tripod.

Feedback

Anyone wanting to capture shots with lovely scenes, natural light and the right moment, luck can play a big part. But patience is the master. I tend to find a great location and a time of day that works. That always acts as the stage, wait for something to happen and bang! Then you have your story. When you get a great backdrop, lovely light and some activity. It all comes together to make an engaging image. The right moment is the difference between a good and an amazing image.
