Grounded

I had seen this old boat for years stuck in the mud near Belingham Bay. It was a mucky effort to close for this image.

Very crisp and clear. The lighting is perfect! I’d love to know how you got this picture to look so amazing.

Behind The Lens

Location
This image was taken in Bellingham Bay, N.W. Washington State during a very low tide.
Time
Sunday, April 12, 2015 at 5:10 PM
Lighting
Low sun with interesting clouds which helped create the dramatic effect see.
Equipment
I used a Nikon D800, Nikon 28-70mm lens, f/5.6, ISO 320, 80th sec., handheld.
Inspiration
I thought it was a dramatic image given the predicament this boat is in. I believe the light and shadow contributed to this drama. There is also some mystery here: How did this boat get stuck in the mud? Who owned the boat? Where is the owner? It tells a story that we would like answers to.
Editing
Very little post processing since the conditions and light were optimal at the time. A bit of saturation, some exposure compensation was used,.
In my camera bag
I carry two Nikon cameras (always a good idea to have a back-up body). I carry a Nikon D3x and a Nikon D800. I also carry five Nikon lenses including: 14-28mm, 28-70mm, 80-400mm, 50mm prime, and a 85mm prime, I also carry a flash unit and a number of filters, tripod.
Feedback
Some good fortune is often required since accident scenes such as this cannot be predicted. Also, some perseverance is often required as in this image which meant slogging through knee deep mud flats in order to get close enough and into the correct position for this composition. Often the most effort taken results in the most interesting and compelling images.
