Location
The Image of my daughters Isabella & Sophia was taken at not far from our house on the edge of a field in Aspen, Colorado.Time
I took the image at around 7.30pm mid June, the sun drops behind the mountains early.Lighting
I wanted to have Isabella & Sophia out of the sun and in the shade, I metered the for back ground and dialed that down one stop as not to blowout the back ground and used a Westcott Rapid Box - 26” Octa Softbox with a Nikon SB700 using a pocket wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver on my SB700 and a MiniTT1 Transmitter with AC3 ZoneController on my camera to expose my little models. Isabella was looking directly at the light and you can see the reflection in her glasses.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7100, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, SB700, Westcott Rapid Box - 26” Octa Softbox, pocket wizard FlexTT5 Transceiver, MiniTT1 Transmitter with AC3 ZoneController, and a bag of M&M’s.Inspiration
As it was Sophia’s 2nd Birthday and we had all been out all day, I wanted a get an image of her with her big sister as the sun was setting, I asked Isabella to look at the Rapid box and to give her little sister a hug.Editing
Only very little processing in light room. I adjusted white balance, Contrast, Shadows, Exposure. I also used the Adjustment Brush to soften their skin a little. In my camera bag
My all round goto portrait lens I have on my Nikon D7100 most of the time is the awesome Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens also in my bag is the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 lens, my flashes - nikon SB600, Nikon SB700 with Pocket Wizard 1x MiniTT1 Transmitter, 2x FlexTT5 Transceivers, 1x AC3 ZoneController, A Sekonic Light meter, A Magmod diffuser and a X-Rite ColorChecker Passport.Feedback
I think the most important aspect of the image is not to blow out the background whilst correctly exposing your models, so you will need to meter for the background first, and adjust your shutter speed so it is under exposed by about one stop, I then focused on Isabella’s eyes, and used I-TTL metering through the Pocket wizards to for correct flash exposure. a bag of M&M’s is very useful too
