Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the dining room of my home. I have quite a few rose bushes and when they are in full bloom I cut them for vases. They give my house a wonderful aroma and will add color and drama to almost any area of your home. Here in Las Vegas it gets really warm in the summer so when the weather is agreeable I appreciate the blooms available. On this day in May my son was visiting and asked if he could cut some roses for me. We put them in a vase and I placed them on a side stand where I display wine bottles. Once placed I took one look and could tell it would make a great picture with a wine and roses theme.

Time

It was 5 or 6 p.m.

Lighting

I used a tripod to steady the camera for the soft lighting coming through our shutters.

Equipment

Canon EOS 70D, 18-55mm EFS kit lens. Manual setting. No flash was used. That would have made the lighting and mood too harsh.

Inspiration

I've been taking pictures for my own personal use for over 15 years. It's a hobby for me and a way to let out my creative side.

Editing

I used Photoshop Elements 14 to make minor adjustments such as light and contrast balance.

In my camera bag

Camera, two batteries, 2 SD cards, 3 lenses, small digital cleaning kit, 2-3 lens filters.

Feedback

Look around your home. See what kind of lighting is available for dramatic shots or whatever themed shot you are trying to get. Use the resources available to you such as flowers, plants, or bugs in your garden area. If you don't have a garden look around your neighborhood. Sometimes there are flowers available in nearby parks or businesses you can take pictures of. In the winter when blooms are limited I go to the local market and will buy a small bouquet of flowers to take home and shoot.
