Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my bedroom, I had put an aquarium on my desktop and I've started shooting with my external flash and a pink gelatine.

Time

I'm proud of this photo! It was the first time I used an external flash with slave mode. It was my first experience with this type of picture.

Lighting

I used a pink gelatine in this picture because I wanted to have a mysterious effect. That way, you would think that this is the water that is colored.

Equipment

For this picture, it was my nikon D3100 with a nikkor 18-55 on 32mm. The camera was on a tripod and my flash "cobra" was near to the aquarium. 1/200s with f/20 and 100ISO.

Inspiration

I decided to take this photo because I had seen a lot of pictures like this. I found the drops in the water and on the pepper were magic! So I tried !

Editing

For the post-processing, I ve done this in Lightroom but it was just for boosting the colors and adjusting a little the light. I make post-processing, but for this kind of photo, I don't like too modifications. I prefer trying to take the "perfect photo" than making a "false" photo in lightroom.

In my camera bag

I'm not a pro photographer, I'm student in industrial design, so I've just a Nikon D3100 with a nikkor 18-55 and a nikkor 55-300. Sometimes, I borrow my father's nikkor 18-135. I like using the neutral density filter with 10stops. With me, i take my tripod.

Feedback

I'm not professional and it was the first time I shot something like that. For this kind of photo, you have to have an aquarium (here, it was 60 liters). You have to add a monochrome background (for me it was a sheet of paper) but you can use anything else. It's better if it's white or black! You need an external flash with slave mode and if it's possible a connexion between flash and camera to trigger the flash. It's better because I've used the integrated flash of the camera to trigger the external flash (so it can reflect the light in the glass of the aquarium and damaging your photo.
