Behind The Lens

Location

Norway, SC, USA

Time

Late afternoon

Lighting

I shot this when the sun was behind a group of clouds, but still poking through here and there. This was crucial to the exposure. This allowed for the sun to still be a large part of the image, but not overwhelming.I also brought the highlights down during the editing process to get more details of the clouds in the in the sky, while being mindful of too much noise.

Equipment

Canon Rebel T3 D1100, no tripod, no flash

Inspiration

I love rustic landscapes, and this view was too gorgeous to pass up. I love the calming scenery, the vibrant colors, and the sense of peace when you're there.

Editing

Brought down the highlights, upped the low lights, and added a little saturation.

In my camera bag

Camera, 58mm and wide angle lenses, cleaning cloth (the weather changes quickly around here), and my iPod for mood music.

Feedback

Beginners still learning the exposure triangle: I encourage you to play around with your exposure, but if you start getting frustrated, switch to a creative mode with a vivid exposure. Also, if you're stuck without a tripod, and you want to get rid of camera shake, switch to a sports mode. For the more experienced photographers: when it comes to shots like these, I love the balanced asymmetrical compositions, so figure out the types of compositions you love and try to emulate those. Take a few shots at a few different angles. You might be surprised by the ones you like more. In my humble opinion, photography is one of those art forms that relies half on logic and reason, and half on creativity, so keep that in mind when shooting. But, no matter what your experience level, always shoot what makes you feel good, inspires you, and the scenes that feed your soul.
