Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at the South Gare a breakwater at the mouth of the River Tees, Redcar and Cleveland North East England. The South Gare offers shelter from stormy weather to ships and small craft off the coast.

Time

This is a tremendous location and known locally as Paddy's Hole after the Irish navies that originally built the breakwarer. Old derilict steelworks , oil refineris and chemical plants dominate the coastline however it was for the small harbour and the small craft sheltering there that I'd planned this evening shoot . As the sun set to the north of the estuary I noticed this structure silhouetted against a beautifully moody sky so I quickly scrambled over the rocks and small boulders so as to get the best possible angle .

Lighting

The sky was heavy however gaps in the cloud allowed for exquisite bursts of light to filter through

Equipment

This was shot with the Samsung NX500 using a 12-24mm f4-5.6 lens along with a grad filter and Manfrotto tripod . It was taken in manual mode at 24mm at f20 iso100 at a 1.3 second exposure daytime white balance.

Inspiration

I had originally intended photographing just the small craft in a tiny harbour close to this structure but as the light fell I noticed just how beautiful this had become in the changing light

Editing

This was a raw file and edited in lightroom .. after the basic edits I experimented with the graduated filter until I was happy with the mood and how I had felt taking the shot then tweaked at the orange saturation hue and luminosity until it all seemed to fit

In my camera bag

Samsung NX500 and always the Samsung 12-24mm f4-5.6 along with the Samsung NX 45mm f1.8 and the Samsung NX 85mm f1.4 I love these lenses just as I love the sensor on the Nx500, it's certainly a giant killer and I'm so sad and perplexed that Samsung have chosen to exit the camera market. I also and very importantly have a sturdy tripod.

Feedback

I pretty much always aim to shoot during the golden hour either at sunset or sunrise for land and seascapes. Getting up early to take photographs is well worth the effort and for me this is the very best time . Taking photos at these times allow you to see things in such a beautiful way due to the special light that non photographers seldom if ever get to see. Always use a good sturdy tripod for land/seascapes and if you don't get that fantastical photograph then don't be altogether disheartened, just enjoy trip and the light you have witnessed , read more , watch more , observe and it will come ...oh and shoot in raw , always shoot your land/seacapes in raw
