Red Moon & Two Planets

At the end, it was worth to get up at 3.30 am on September 28th. Lots of clouds passing by, but then I got it : )

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this pic on the rooftop of my home in La Laguna, Tenerife Island (Spain)

Time

This picture was taken at around 3.45 am, on the 28th September 2015, when that amazing "blood moon" was anounced. It was a cold night and it was difficult to take with several clouds passing by, that made the moon only appear by short intervals! But a little "hunter's patience" and voila.

Lighting

Well, I wanted the moon to show its craters and details, but also to be careful that her bright border was not burned in any way, so I tried to make all in good balance. I'm sure that if the dark clouds were not putting it difficult, I may have gotten an even clearer image. But it was happy ending, and also it was nice to have captured those two planets as companions.

Equipment

I used my Canon SX 50, wich has a powerful optical zoom and also a tripod. Manual mode. The moon moves fast and also does the Earth so its a matter of putting it into the frame several times, chasing her.

Inspiration

I love the space, planets, galaxies and the Moon. And because I wanted to capture her in an unusual state, this pic had to be taken, being a full lunar eclipse something not quite common. In fact, you can take many different moons depending on the time of day, moon phase, or season of the year. And that is something great to bear in mind.

Editing

After taking the pic, I remember to have adjusted a bit the borders or frame to choose the final format, and also I added a tiny bit a exposure in the dark side of the moon to balance better the whole body and bring to life a little more. I like the phrase "The better is the picture, the less you have to do after", so when you don't have to do too much in postpro, its always a good sign for me, or has more credit.

In my camera bag

By now, Canon SX50 and Canon 80D cameras and tripod. I want to add some cool gadgets, like remote shutter and filters, and keep growing. that helps me to get to new horizons.

Feedback

Patience for getting the perfect moment is essential. Sometimes we have to wait or in this case, get up in the middle of night. But then, when you capture exactly what you wanted, its great to share it and see people's reactions. So its key, to have love for beautiful things. Camera set in manual mode will help you to adjust speed and aperture obviously. If you have DSLR, its clear you need a big lens. But in this case, my bridge camera helped me better. Use tripod and and maybe use a format different than 16/9 because the moon will get out of frame very quick! Good luck, moon hunters.
