Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Fairhope, Alabama. This particular spot is known as Orange Street Pier because it is at the end of, you guessed it, Orange Street. Fairhope is an artists colony so it's crawling with photographers, painters, sculptors, authors, musicians and all kinds of creative people which makes it a very creative environment to live in. It's slogan is "A small drinking village with a huge fishing problem". Fairhope is famous for it's monthly art walk, where each shop in town basically throws a giant wine party and the whole town is invited.

Time

This particular photo was taken around 6:45 p.m. Sunsets in Fairhope are a very big deal, we take our sunsets very seriously. Around 6:30 p.m. every day, the locals flock to the main pier and municipal beach to watch the sunset, which is not pictured here but it is just behind me. Also, if you look closely at the pier in the photo there is another photographer standing near the end of the pier setting up his tripod and camera.

Lighting

There isn't really any trick to the lighting. Fairhope is basically like something out of a movie, it's always stunning, especially around the golden hours. It's a bay side town with beaches and piers and bluffs around every corner with beautiful giant oak trees and Spanish moss lining the streets. No matter what time of day, the lighting is perfect for any sort of photography.

Equipment

This photo was shot on a Nikon D3200 with a 18-55mm lens. No tripod, nothing fancy.

Inspiration

As I said before, the locals take sunsets very seriously and I happily fall into that category. This is just one of those places that is very near and dear to my heart and I absolutely love it so I'm always photographing it.

Editing

I'm not a big fan of post processing. I'm lazy and I don't like computers all that much so I try to minimize my time spent editing whenever possible by trying to get the best image possible. Fairhope pretty much sets up a great image for me so the post processing is very short and sweet, mainly correction my own mistakes. In this particular image, I underexposed the shot just little bit so I fixed that and adjusted the Contrast just slightly to balance that out. But other than that, the scene did all the work for me.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my Nikon D3200, 18-55mm lense, 50mm 1.8 lense, 70-300mm 3.4 lens and my tripod which changes quite frequently as I am not very kind to my tripods and the saltwater and sand ruins them rather quickly. I also use a polarizing filter to cut back on the glare on the water since I do a lot of seascapes and it also keeps sand and spray off of the lens if the wind picks up while I'm out shooting.

Feedback

I never really "plan" a shot or have much of an idea of what I am going for most of the time. I shoot whatever I think looks cool, whether any one else thinks it does or not. My advice is just keep it simple, don't over think an image. If you think it's cool, take the photo. Don't get caught up in the science behind making the perfect image because if you're shooting to impress someone else, you're not going to be happy with whatever image you take. So keep it simple and shoot for your own enjoyment so you'll always have great images.
